Shawana Walton Bernard

November 7, 1972 ~ January 13, 2023 (age 50) 50 Years Old

Obituary

Shawana Lanelle Walton, our beloved “Buff,” passed away on January 13, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Lewis and Mattie Nell Walton, and was born on November 7, 1972, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Shawana attended school in Broward County, where she received a high school diploma from Boyd Anderson High. After high school she attended Atlantic Vocational School, where she received her certification as a nail technician. After working in the manicurist field for a brief time, she worked in several other job capacities, and finally found her passion in baking. After attending several baking seminars, where she sharpened her cake decorating skills, and cultivated her craft, she was finally ready to open her business. As a result, Cakes by Shawana was born. Many people near and far have enjoyed her delicious cakes and pies and the unique way she made your desired desserts taste amazing and come to life.

With her loving presence, cool and calm demeanor, kind smile and infectious laugh, rarely angered but vocal of her thoughts and opinions, Shawana was a soul that many gravitated to. She was a friend to all who loved her, and she received love in return. She was blessed to be a blessing to those fortunate to know her, love her, and be loved by her. Though we are saddened by the loss and void of her presence...If she were here today, she would not want too many tears! She would encourage us all to live, think beyond our limitations, be compassionate, kind, grateful, prayerful, and find joy in the little things in life. Through it all, even with the limitations she faced herself, she loved life, she had hopes, dreams, and aspirations...many of which she did achieve.

Shawana is survived by her immediate family: her dedicated husband, Leaford Bernard and loving daughter Le’daijah Bernard; her affectionate stepmother Mary Sullivan (Will); her loving brothers, James Lewis Walton Jr., Steven Jerome Walton Sr. (Fannette), and Kevin Lerone Walton; a mother-in-law, Merna Rose (Ernest); a Godchild, Makayla Smith; a special nephew, Tavares Harris; an Aunt, Ida Mae Laster; a great Uncle, Mr. James Butts; a great Aunt, Catherine Butts; and two dedicated friends, Christine Bray and Tracie Smith.  She will also be loved and missed by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, extended family near and far.
